Workshop, SAA meeting Wednesday

STEUBENVILLE — The May demonstration and meeting of the Cecy Rose’ Watercolor-on-Yupo workshop and the Steubenville Art Association will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday. The Cecy Rose demonstration, meeting and election of officers will commence at 5 p.m. in the meeting room of Historic Fort Steuben, located at 120 S. Third St., Steubenville.

The nominating committee, headed by Bob Watson, Jr., submitted the following slate of officers: Judy Schmidt, president; Gina Judy, vice-president; Francesca Veltri, recording secretary; Deanna Irvin, treasurer, and Mary Keenan, trustee. Committee heads and parliamentarian are appointed by the president, most staying in their respective positions. Officers will be installed at the June meeting.

Yupo is a slick, synthetic paper that can be exciting to work with in techniques similar to those used in printmaking. Spreading and scraping of paint or inks is encouraged, as yupo is a plastic surface with no absorption. Rose noted, "I’ve discovered that the primary requirement for creating a successful piece on yupo is patience. In this workshop we will explore the use of various, ‘tools’ besides brushes that give abstract as well as realistic effects on the yupo surface using either tube or pan watercolors. And there's no need to invest a fortune in supplies. Such items such as squeegees can be replaced with a credit card or piece of cardboard. Sponge rollers can be purchased at a hardware or paint-store. Even the cheapest watercolor paint can create nice effects."

Early workshop registration is encouraged so as to obtain a supply-list from the SAA, although some supplies such as yupo, canbe purchased for at the workshop. Late registration fees are being waived. Checks can be made payable to SAA, P.O. Box 1061, Steubenville, OH. 43952. Costs are $40 for members, $45 for non-members. Supplies are listed in the club booklet, which can be provided by any member. For information, call President Judy Schmidt at (740) 424-3835.
